About AlphaLett

AlphaLett is a free word-chaining game. You're given a category — athletes, actors, animals, countries, brands, foods, movies and TV, cities, musicians or words — and you name one entry after another, where each answer has to connect to the one before it by a letter. It sounds simple. It gets hard quickly, which is the fun of it.

Why we made it

Games like "name a country that starts with the last letter of the one before" are a classic car-ride and dinner-table pastime. We wanted a version you can play in a minute on your phone, share with friends, and settle arguments with — "I bet you can't name ten NFL players in a row" — without anyone having to keep score on paper.

What you can play

AlphaLett has 10 categories and more than 148,567 valid answers behind them. You can play:

  • Daily Specials — one fresh Letter by Letter puzzle per category every day. Everyone gets the same puzzle, you only get one attempt, and the fastest time wins the day's leaderboard.
  • Free play — Random and Classic modes against a 90-second clock, in any category. For Athletes you can narrow it to a single league such as MLB, NFL or NBA.
  • Shuffle — the category changes every turn. Build your own Shuffle from just the categories you want.
  • Duels — challenge a friend on the same category and mode, then compare scores.

Where the answers come from

Our lists are assembled from public data sources and our own curation: sports rosters from league data, film and TV credits from public film databases, countries and cities from open geographic data, and song titles from public chart histories. We keep adding to them. If a correct answer is rejected, tell us through the contact page — missing entries are the most useful feedback we get, and we add them.

Free to play, supported by ads

AlphaLett is free. We may show advertising and use affiliate links (for example when you look up a brand or destination from your results) to pay for hosting and development. We explain how we handle data and advertising in our Privacy Policy and Disclosures.
